Yahoo! is closing down the ng free web hosting service GeoCities (geocities.yahoo.com),.
On GeoCities homepage, it’s written: “after careful consideration, we have decided to close GeoCities later this year,”
GeoCities, perhaps the most well known of the free web hosting services was acquired by Yahoo! for $2.87 billion in 1999. An FAQ information page directs users to sign up for paid Yahoo! web hosting accounts.

I actually noticed that the other day. In response to that I went searching and found very reliable hosting at an extremely competitive rate. They even offer compensation, this way I don’t have to come out of pocket too much for the products that I need. I actually come out on top every month which is 10x better than free. Hope this helps as this article has put a few things in perspective for myself.

It is quiet painful to learn geocities closure, geocities helped a lot to spread internet for last few years by attracting people to create their own websites.

Personally, the positive contribution from Geocities has been very remarkable for the Internet world. Looking at another angle, it is not a bad idea to encourage paid hosting as there lots of bargain in the world, and other add-on services are bundled as package, which is truly attractive. It could be a good idea to promote paid hosting at more competitive rates with more value-add services.

There are plenty of free websites out there that are just as good, if not better, than geocities was. Weebly.com, Wordpress.org, etc…
